Potential for Iranian Cyber Response to U.S. Military Strike in Baghdad

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) released an alert about the potential for Iran to attack the United States cyber infrastructure considering the current tension. Iran has a history of using cyber terrorism in response to perceived harm; Late 2011-Mid-2013 they targeted the U.S. Financial sector, these attacks prevented customers from accessing their accounts and cost the banks millions of dollars in remediation.

In August and September 2013, they gained access to a d. am in New York State obtaining information regarding the operation and status of dam. In February 2014 they hacked into the Sands Casino in Las Vegas stealing customer data and credit card information along with wiping their computer systems. From 2013 through 2017 they conducted a massive cyber theft campaign that targeted academic and intellectual property. Because of these recent incidents, CISA is worried about the potential for more cyber terrorism in the United States by the Islamic Republic of Iran.

CISA recommends that organizations:

  • Adopt a state of Heightened awareness.
  • Increase organizational vigilance.
  • Confirm reporting processes.
  • Exercise organizational incident response plans.

CISA also recommends that the following measures are put into action by an organization’s IT team:

  • Disable all unnecessary ports and protocols.
  • Enhance monitoring of network and email traffic
  • Patch externally facing equipment.
  • Log and limit usage of PowerShell.
  • Ensure backups are up to date.

Is your Managed Services Helpdesk Ready for the Holidays?

With the holidays right around the corner, have you finalized your action plan to account for a potential increase in tickets while simultaneously dealing with key employees taking extra time off?

While many people assume that an IT help desk slows down over the holidays, many times the ticketing level and number of projects stay steady, or increase, while staffing levels decline. There are many reasons for this increase, businesses need to spend money toward the end of the year for tax purposes, budget is still left, or non-critical updates have been pushed off to the end of the year. Some companies traditionally slow down, an equal amount, hit their busy season and the success of the year hinges on this critical 45-day time period. For these companies, their IT team needs to enable their success and not be a hinderance to achieving their annual goals.

To successfully navigating the holidays the correct action plan needs to be in place.

The first aspect of creating this strategy is to analyze the prior years holiday season. How many tickets were created, priority level of these tickets, volume of last-minute projects and onboardings took place. How does this number compare to the rest of your year? If your customer base has grown over the past year, what type of businesses have been brought on to your service?

Staffing levels need to be set and scheduled to appropriately match the projections that are created based on this historical analysis of past holiday seasons. Address your full-time permanent staff’s vacation requests as early as possible. Vacation and time off requests can peak during November and December. These time off requests should be handled as early as possible in the year, to ensure that staffing is at the proper level. Allow flexibility if possible, in your scheduling, if not all employee requests can be met, consider offering half days or permitting some staff to work from home.

Set customer expectations early, especially with your larger clients. Make sure that they are aware that staffing will fluctuate as the holidays come closer. Look into using customer set prioritization levels on tickets. A traditionally lower priority ticket may become a larger issue if your customer is trying to leave for their own vacation. Don’t assume what the priority is to your customer. If any of your customers have repetitive issues, be proactive prior to the holidays and eliminate potential problems early. This can be handled by creating a knowledge base of frequent problems that can be fixed, be it a best practice guide or a quick tutorial. Verify that your internal automation is in place and working correctly. Be it auto bots to correctly route your customers or making sure that your internal applications, CRM, order management and invoicing tools are integrating correctly to reduce extra busy and non-productive work.

The holiday season can be a very stressful time for your employees and customers alike. Make sure that your staff is properly prepared for overstressed customers. This can be accomplished through awareness campaigns, training and understanding appropriate de-escalation tactics. Do the little things for your employees; allow longer lunch breaks so they can sneak in some holiday shopping of their own, bring in meals, snacks or coffee and most importantly make sure they are aware that their hard work is appreciated.

You have been working all week long on a proposal that is due by the end of the day.  Hours of writing, thinking, editing, more writing, reworking and the proposal is finally done.  This is for a client that you have spent months chasing, calling, taking to lunch and finally you were giving the opportunity to earn their business. 

The perfect email is crafted, you attach the proposal, hit send and then nothing.  Panic starts to set in, the proposal is due in an hour, you calm your self down, pick up the phone and call your managed service provider.  After 5 rings, you are forced to leave a voicemail.  10 minutes pass, you pick the phone back up, call and they answer this time.  You explain the urgency of the issue and are told by the tech they will get to the issue soon.  20 minutes later, the tech calls you back with more questions, they are ready to start working on the issue.

Current Average Response Time: under 14 minutes

As you stare at the clock, pace and debate calling your provider again, 25 minutes pass and the issue still isn’t resolve.  Finally, your tech realizes that they cannot fix the issue and internally escalates the ticket to a level two tech that can fix what you assume is an easy problem. The last 5 minutes tick by as your deadline passes, unable to send your proposal.  Months of work are lost and the opportunity to earn the business is gone forever.  Eventually your issue is solved, and your email once again is functioning properly, but it is too late for the hard deadline your potential customer has set.

Recently, HubWise Technology, audited our client base looking for commonalities of why they chose us and what drove them away from their past IT services provider. Our founding principle is Do Better and we constantly strive to put this principle into action. 

Our belief was that if we could quantify the reasons that propelled the change, we could ensure that we don’t fall prey to these negative behaviors.  The results that we found weren’t unexpected, but the lack of diversity in the reasoning behind the change was surprising.  Our assumption was that there would be 10-12 common reasons why companies chose to explore a new managed service provider.  What we found is that we could classify the differing reasons into 5 basic categories; poor response and resolution time, lack of technological direction, feeling undervalued as an organization, not having or meeting set expectations and a general lack of professionalism.

Response and resolution time is the time that it takes for your managed service provider to acknowledge that you have an issue and the time that it takes for that issue to be solved.  This is a critical aspect to the day-to-day operations of a managed service provider.  When response and resolution time are increased, companies lose money, employees become frustrated, and critical operations can fail. The first promise is we will Plan out all on-site deployments, on-boarding for managed service clients, procedures, practices and even how we close open tickets.  These plans are not static and while we are following standard operating procedures for all events, they are adaptable and allowed to evolve.  By pre-planning these events, this allows us to think through potential pitfalls that can be ran into during deployments. This planning allows HubWise to place ourselves in a position to succeed and exceed our customers’ expectations.

Communicate

The Second brand promise is to Communicate.  One of the pain points our customer base felt with their old provider, is that they never knew when projects would take place, if tickets were closed, and the status of orders.  This customer pain we understand.  Therefore, we promise to make sure our customer base understands our plan that we have in place.  This isn’t as simple as emailing a timeline once. This means having an open dialogue and making sure to keep engaged throughout the completion of the project.

Deliver

Lamborghini Sian Hybrid

Lamborghini Sian Hybrid

Lamborghini has now joined the ranks of providing hybrid gas and battery driven vehicles.  The Lamborghini Sian is not the average hybrid vehicle that has been designed for fuel economy and geared towards environmentalist concerns.  This is the fastest Lamborghini that has ever been produced and is one of the rarest.  Only 63 have been made and all were sold prior to production.  The cost for this highly customizable vehicle starts at 3.4 million dollars. 

For 3.4 million dollars, what do you get? You get the use of supercapacitors to drive electric power instead of the use of Lithium Ion batteries.  Supercapacitors are 3 times lighter and store 3 times the amount of energy in comparison to a lithium ion battery.  They also recharge incredibly quick through braking only and always discharge all the stored energy when in use.  This low weight battery adds an additional 34 horsepower to the 785 horsepower that is generated by 6.5-liter V12.  This additional power makes the Sian the most powerful Lamborghini ever built.  This extra power pushes the Sian to a 2.8 second 0-60 time, about .2 seconds faster than the Aventador SVJthe old record holder.  More impressive is the mid-speed power that the supercapacitors create.  It takes 1.2 seconds less time to accelerate from 43 mph to 75 mph. The car is electronically limited to a top end speed of 217 mph. 

The opinions of this car vary from person to person as much as one would expect.  It is not the fastest hybrid hyper-car, the Ferrari SF90 Stradale and McLaren Speedtail have better numbers on the track and at the dyno, its exclusivity makes it valued by Lamborghini enthusiasts. The use of supercapacitors instead of Lithium Ion set it apart from the crowd and allows Lamborghini to test in real life the potential of this energy source.

HP Laptops – Unattended Sleep Timeout 

After deploying several new HP laptops in the past few months, I have noticed once complaint from almost all users. Many users are reporting that their PC will go to sleep after roughly two minutes of not being in use. I had gone through the normal troubleshooting avenues of checking sleep settings and display timeout settings, to find they were set correctly. Even when set to go to sleep never, this behavior was still occurring. I came to find that this behavior is from a misbehaving feature called System Unattended Sleep Timeout.

The purpose of this feature is, when the PC is woken up from a Wake on LAN event, it will use this timer rather than the user set sleep timer. The problem we are seeing is that it takes over after any wake event, even user interaction. It seems that on these new HPs, the default timer is 2 minutes. This may be happening on other brands, but I have not experienced it myself. 

Now the fix. Normally, this kind of thing could be found in Advanced Power Settings. To access this, navigate Settings > System > Power & Sleep > Additional Power Settings > Change Plan Settings > Change Advanced Power Settings > Sleep. The problem is that this setting is missing in power options. We have to make a change to the registry to reenable it. If you open regedit.exe and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > Control > Power > PowerSettings > 238C9FA8-0AAD-41ED-83F4-97BE242C8F20 > 7bc4a2f9-d8fc-4469-b07b-33eb785aaca0, you will see an entry called attributes on the right. If you double click this to edit, you can change the value from 1 to 2. Upon returning to advanced power settings, you will find the System Unattended Sleep Timeout feature is now available. You can change this value to match your normal sleep timeout to resolve this issue. Hopefully, this will be fixed in future builds.
